Baobab oil is extracted from seeds of giant trees that are found in dry regions of Africa. Baobab is also famous for its appearance in the French novel, “The Little Prince”Referred to as the “tree of life” by the African people, it has a wide range of traditional uses. The whole tree, including its fruit, trunk, leaves, and seeds, has unique uses for food, clothes, and medicine. Traditionally, African people used seed oil for hair care and skin protection.

Characteristics & Benefits

Containing vitamins A, D, E, and F, Baobab oil effectively moisturizes and rejuvenates the skin. Its main fatty acid compositions include oleic acid and palmitic acid. The former providing high moisturizing properties while the latter protects the skin by creating a sebum barrier. This oil is relatively thick and heavy and contains Omega 6, 3, and 9, which supports skin rejuvenation.

Baobab oil contains several vitamins, including vitamins A, D, E, and ‘F’ (Nkafamiya et
al., 2007). Vitamins A and ‘F’ are polyunsaturated fatty acids, which rejuvenates and
regenerates cell membranes. Vitamin E is a natural antioxidant with anti-aging
properties.

Evidence data 2: Skin protection and regeneration

Palmitic acid (24%), oleic acid (36%), and linoleic acid (34%) are the main fatty acids in this product. Palmitic acid yields a derivative called retinyl palmitate, which activates fibroblasts in the skin to synthesize collagen and hyaluronic acid, to promote skin regeneration. Oleic acid moisturizes and softens the skin.

The manufacturer of this product organically grows raw material in their 10-hectare farm in rural northeastern South Africa. The 300 employees in their company enjoy working from their local villages where employment opportunities are scarce.
